The Altis ( Japanese : ア ル テ ィ ス ) is a passenger car from the Japanese brand Daihatsu .

The vehicle was created as a sister model of the Toyota Camry and has only been available on the Japanese home market since its market launch in spring 2000. The first and second generation Altis is a rarity and was only built to order. Only ten units were manufactured per month, making the Altis an extreme example of badge engineering .

The first generation (internal: SXV20) of the Altis came on the market in March 2000. The body was largely identical to that of the Toyota Camry .

The interior, on the other hand, has been purposefully redesigned to appeal to bankers, corporate clients, government figures and other high-ranking personalities. The Altis ranks one floor higher than its Toyota sister model. In view of this, Daihatsu decided to only build the Altis to order and not to throw it on the market as a high-volume model. An original idea of offering the Altis worldwide was rejected by Toyota Motor Corporation from the outset.

In the very first Altis-generation 2.5- came liter - petrol engine with an output of 96 kW (131 hp ) from the series SXV20 (5S-FE) are used. This was only built into the Altis. This engine could not be ordered for other models.

After one and a half years of building the first generation, the Altis was replaced by a new generation in September 2001, at the same time as the Camry. Up to then 180 units of the Altis SXV20 had been built.

The second generation (internal: SXV30) of the Altis came on the market in September 2001. Here, too, the idea was kept with the Altis above the Toyota Camry. With a newly designed interior, all sorts of extras could now be installed and promised customers even greater comfort.

2AZ-FE engines were used as the engine. Six different engine variants were now available. The standard version only had the 117 kW (159 hp) engine. The next three higher versions could be ordered with two different 118 kW (160 PS) or one 120 kW (163 PS) VVT-i engine. The top version, on the other hand, was available with either a 123 kW (167 PS) or a 125 kW (170 PS) engine.

In July 2004 the Altis underwent minor changes in the interior and exterior. The series until then was finally classified under the code 5-GEN . The units manufactured afterwards, however, run under the code 7-GEN .

A total of 410 units of the Altis SXV30 had been built up to the model change in January 2006.

The third generation (internal: SXV40) of the Altis came on the market in January 2006 and was built until 2010. Fundamental changes were only made in the design and in the slight change in dimensions.

Together with some models from the Toyota group, the Daihatsu Altis has undergone a change in its proportions. This ensured that the Altis was now longer, wider and also heavier than its sister model. At the same time, the interior also had to be adapted to this new situation and was once again able to benefit from a slight change in style. This even resulted in a selection of the decor. So the buyer could choose the most suitable for him between gray-beige , silver , red , brown , wood decor (only in the top version ) and even silver display.

In terms of the engine, the selection from the 2AZ-FE series was largely retained. Only in the top model was the version with 125 kW deleted, so that it was only delivered with an output of 123 kW.
