The Daihatsu Compagno , called the Daihatsu 1000 in Africa , was a model of the passenger car of the Japanese automobile brand Daihatsu , which was produced between 1963 and 1969. The small car was available with two or four doors as a sedan, two-door as a Spider ( convertible ) or pickup, or as a station wagon with two doors and a tailgate. Unlike other small cars of the time (such as the Toyota Publica or the Opel Kadett), it was not self-supporting , but built on a ladder frame . The car was powered by a four-stroke gasoline engine with hanging valves and four cylinders in line with either 0.8 or 1.0 liter displacement. The Spider was also available with manifold injection , the other versions were only available with a carburettor. The power was transmitted to the rear axle via a fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission. The front wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones with torsion bar springs, and at the rear there was a rigid axle on semi-elliptical leaf springs.
