Rocky F70

The Japanese Daihatsu Rugger , mostly sold as Daihatsu Rocky in Europe and also called Daihatsu Taft for some markets , is an off-road vehicle made by the automobile manufacturer Daihatsu .

1st generation (1984-2002)

history

The car was built from 1984 and replaced the Daihatsu Taft / Wildcat - the first Daihatsu vehicle to be sold in Germany - (F1, F2, F5 and F6 series) from Daihatsu, but was also known as the Wildcat until model year 1988 sold.

He was in the F7 series (F70 short wheelbase - open or closed, F75 long wheelbase - with non-removable hardtop, F77 pickup) with 78 hp naturally aspirated diesel, 2.8 l displacement and the F8 series (F80 short wheelbase, F85RV long wheelbase and F87 pickup) with a 2-liter petrol engine .

In the tried and tested off-road vehicle tradition, the robust features of rigid axles and leaf springs , front and rear, were taken from the taffeta. In addition, a at the front axle stabilizer and installed a variable differential lock (a so-called friction lock) at the rear, which serves for the driving safety in the field and on the road. The F75 still had a suspension that was adjustable in three stages (hard, medium, soft). The high trailer load of 2.1 t (braked) with a vertical load of 100 kg was remarkable for this relatively small off-road vehicle.

In 1987 the 2.8-liter diesel engine was retrofitted with a turbocharger , which could now produce 67 kW (91 hp). In 1991 this engine was modernized again by getting a charge air cooler and modified pistons, increasing the power to 102 hp. This engine was installed unchanged until production was discontinued in 2002. The engine's output has been reduced to 72 kW (98 PS) for the German (European) market, due to the use of exhaust gas recirculation in order to comply with the applicable legal regulations.

The models were only slightly modified up to 1993 (from 1988 angular headlights, grill, spare wheel holder and, for legal reasons, lower rear lights from model year 1992).

From 1993 there was a comprehensive modification, with the models F73, F78, F85 replacing the models F70, F75 and F85RV. Apart from the partially revised body, the axle suspensions were changed; the Rocky got independent suspension with double wishbones and torsion bar suspension on the front axle, the rigid axle remained at the rear - but with coil springs and a stabilizer. Furthermore, instrument clusters were installed, the open Rocky was no longer offered.

In 1997 production for the Japanese home market was discontinued. The export model was produced until 2002. In Indonesia, taffeta was still being built into 2007.

2nd generation (since 2019)

Rocky A200

At the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2019, Daihatsu presented a new generation of the Rocky. It is based on a newly introduced Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. The Toyota Raize , also presented in autumn 2019, is identical to the Rocky. The series is powered by a supercharged one - liter in-line three-cylinder petrol engine with 72 kW (98 hp).

Success in racing

  • 1985 Paris-Dakar rally: third place overall
  • 1985/1986 Wynns Safari Rally ( Australia ): Class winner

Replicas

The Rocky (F75) was also marketed under license by Bertone under the name Freeclimber with BMW engines and high-quality interior fittings. The superstructures were better protected against rust by Bertone by galvanizing.
