The Esse (Japanese: エ ッ セ) was a kei car offered from December 20, 2005 on the home market of the Japanese manufacturer Daihatsu .

The model was established as an alternative to the competing Honda Z and a cheaper alternative to the Mira . It is considered the official offshoot of the Mira.

In order to keep the price for the model low, Daihatsu waived the possibility of installing various special equipment. The interior was therefore captivating with bare sheet steel in the body color and its simple seats and simple plastic parts. The engine, however, was a new development. The three-cylinder gasoline engine KF-VE with a displacement of 658 cm³ offered an output of 58 hp.

Five different model variants were available: X, L, D, ECO

Depending on the model variant selected, the buyer could then choose between a manual 5-speed transmission, 3-speed automatic transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The only extras at the Esse were an AM / FM radio or a radio with CD player and the associated loudspeaker system. An all-wheel drive system that was standard until 2006 was converted into a switchable all-wheel drive from 2007 .

For some time now, tuners have also been concentrating more and more on redesigning the model according to their needs. There are currently tuning parts and even completely tuned vehicles from brands such as Toyota Racing Development (TRD) , Wald Tuning , Tommy Kaira and a few more.
