The Daihatsu Applause is built from June 1989 to May 2000 sedan of the lower middle class .
Although the vehicle has a notchback , the tailgate is hinged above the window ( liftback ). The concept of the stepped rear with a large tailgate was also adopted in 1991 in the Seat Toledo . The Škoda Superb II took up this idea again in 2008 and refined it with a two-part tailgate.
Model variants
Over the entire production period, the Applause was only offered in one body variant. At the beginning of 1993 there was a slight revision, which included a changed front. In mid-1997, the Applause underwent an extensive model upgrade. He received a chrome grille , the interior was upgraded and got a more modern rear. At the same time, the center of gravity was noticeably higher, which impaired the driving dynamics.
In mid-2000, the Applause was taken out of the program due to falling sales. The car was considered very robust and reliable. In old age, the fixed rear brake calipers, which could not be replaced economically, proved to be the Achilles' heel.
Equipment variants
Different equipment variants were offered for the model variants. For the first model, the basic equipment was designated with the abbreviation Li . In the upscale version XiL there was, among other things, a power steering , electric window lifters and a split folding rear seat bench as standard . In addition, the variants XiL automatic (with 3-speed automatic) and ZiL (corresponds to the XiL equipment with all-wheel drive ) were offered.
After the first facelift in 1993, the basic equipment continued to be designated with the abbreviation Li . The equipment variant Xi included , among other things, a standard power steering. Based on the Xi variant , there were the Xi automatic (with 3-speed automatic) and Zi (corresponds to the Xi equipment with all-wheel drive and rear drum brakes ).
As part of the major facelift in 1997, the number of equipment variants was reduced to two. In addition to the basic Xi model, an air conditioning system was also installed as standard in the XiC model . As an option, a 4-speed automatic transmission could be ordered for both variants instead of the 5-speed manual transmission.
