In Germany, the small roadster was introduced in 2004 as a right-hand drive with a 660 cubic centimeter engine with 50 kW (68 hp) (L880).
The import of the right-hand drive to Germany was discontinued at the end of 2005 and from spring 2006 it was replaced by a left-hand drive with a 1,300 cubic centimeter engine with 64 kW (87 PS) (L881).

At the start of production in Japan, 30,000 orders had been received after a few weeks. Due to the great success in Japan, the Copen was also exported to Germany from the beginning of 2004.

Between 2003 and 2011, only 2,511 Daihatsu Copen were newly registered in Germany. 2006 was the most successful sales year with 802 units.
