Fábio Villela Barreto Borges (born June 6, 1957 in Rio de Janeiro ; † November 20, 2019 there ) was a Brazilian filmmaker .

Life

Barreto was born in Rio de Janeiro as the son of Luiz Carlos Barreto and Lucy Barreto , who have been among the best-known filmmakers in Brazil since the 1960s. His older brother is the filmmaker Bruno Barreto . Barreto made his directorial debut in 1977 with the short film A História de José e Maria . A second short film, Mané Garrincha , followed in 1978, before Barreto published his first feature-length film as a director and screenwriter in 1982 with the love drama Índia, a Filha do Sol . Índia, a Filha do Sol was produced by his parents and grandmother Lucíola Vilella .

The 1985 film O Rei do Rio was based on the play O Rei de Ramos by Dias Gomes , while Barreto filmed the novel of the same name by Domingos Olímpio with Luzia Homem in 1988 . O Quatrilho , Barreto's feature film from 1995, was based on Jose Clemente Pozenato 's novel of the same name. The film is about the two Italian couples Teresa and Angelo as well as Pierina and Massimo, who want to settle in Rio Grande do Sul , whereby the love between Massimo and Teresa leads to difficulties. O Quatrilho was awarded three prizes at the International Festival of New Latin American Film in 1995 and was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 1996 as a Brazilian contribution .

In 1997, Bela Donna Barreto's first feature film shot in a Brazilian-American co-production was released. Barreto then turned to television and made a few series episodes, including an episode of the Brazilian version of Desperate Housewives , Donas de Casa Desesperadas . His last feature film was the film Lula, o Filho do Brasil , based on Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's early years , which was released on January 1, 2010.

Barreto was seriously injured in a car accident in Botafogo on December 19, 2009 and was subsequently in a coma . In 2014, it was revealed that he had periods of minimal awareness. He died in November 2019 after almost ten years in a coma.

Fábio Barreto was married to the actresses Marcia Barreto , Dora Pellegrino and from 2003 to Déborah Kalume . He was the father of four children.
