Secrets of the Heart (original title Secretos del corazón ) is a Spanish youth drama from 1997 by Montxo Armendáriz. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Foreign Language Film” at the 1998 Academy Awards.

action

Javi is nine years old and grows up with his older brother Juan with two unmarried aunts in a small Spanish town, where the boys also go to school. The children only see their mother, who lives in the country, during her holidays. For Javi, a room in an empty house that his brother shows him is of particular interest, as nobody is allowed to enter it and the room is always locked. From Juan he learns that their father has been found dead there and that his screams can still be heard there. Another reason for Javi not to see through the adult world. With his friend Carlos, he tries not only to fathom the secrets the house hides, but also to research the behavior of adults.

Other things also bother the boy. For example, an older boy explains him rather rudely when his bitch and a German shepherd copulate that they would just "screw". What the word means, however, is not really clear to him.

criticism

The film database Filmernst spoke of a fascinating youth drama that “tells in atmospheric dense images” and “skillfully mixes elements of children's films with those of a mystery thriller”.

The film magazine Cinema drew the following conclusion about the “affectionate childhood study of the Basque model director Montxo Armendáriz”: “Curiosity, fear and innocence as pure poetry”.

Kabel eins found that it was a "sensitive film", "which completely engages in the childish imagination of its protagonist in order to capture the secrets and hardships, but also the beautiful sides of childhood."
