Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol ( หม่อมเจ้า ชาตรี เฉลิม ยุคล , RTGS : Mom Chao Chatrichaloem Yukhon, pronunciation: [t͡ɕʰâːtriːt͡ɕʰàlɤːm júʔkʰon] , nickname Than Mui ; born November 29, 1942 in Bangkok ) is a Thai film director , screenwriter and film producer and film producer Thai- amp; . He was a member of the jury of the Berlinale and was nominated for an Oscar .

Early years

Prince Chatrichalerm was born in Bangkok as the son of Prince Anusornmongkolkarn Yukol and Mom Ubol Yukol Na Ayutthaya. Both parents were filmmakers and co-founders of the Lavo Pappayon film company. His uncle Prince Bhanuband Yugala ("Prince Bhanu") was a Thai film pioneer.

Chatrichalerm was sent to Australia for schooling . He then went to the University of California, Los Angeles and received a degree in geology with a minor in film . He took part in lectures with Francis Ford Coppola and Roman Polański , whereupon the director and producer Merian C. Cooper hired him as an assistant.

Movies

Chatrichalerm's best-known work is the film series about King Naresuan (2006-2010). In 2001 he had already filmed the legend of Queen Suriyothai , but his activity dates back to the 1970s when he made the first Thai science fiction film, Out of the Darkness (1971).

Chatrichalerm was one of the first Thai filmmakers to deal with social changes. Among other things, he staged the story of Dr. Karn ( Khao Chue Karn , "His name is Karn"), which is based on a story by Suwanni Sukhontha . It denounced the corruption in the country during the brief period of the Thai democracy movement in 1973. Even the status of Chatrichalerm as a prince did not prevent the censors from cutting the film from crucial elements. But the director was able to get the unabridged version through on the occasion of a personal screening for Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn .

Chatrichalerm's films are mostly about social problems, including A. on prostitution ( Hotel Angel , 1974), premature sex ( Daughter and Daughter 2 ), environmental protection ( The Elephant Keeper , 1987), and the excesses of drug trafficking ( Powder Road , 1991).

Three of his films were nominated for an Oscar : The Elephant Keeper , Song for Chao Phaya and Daughter 2 .

Film epics

Since 1999 Chatrichalerm has been dealing more and more with Thai history. First he staged the legend of the Suriyothai , which retells an incident from the 16th century in Thai history . This project was also financially supported by Queen Sirikit and the royal family. The film was initially supposed to last eight hours, then it was cut down to three hours for the Thai audience. An approximately two-hour version by Francis Ford Coppola is now circulating in the USA and Europe .

An even bigger project has been the story of the great King Naresuan since 2006, which is told in three parts ( King Naresuan - The Ruler of Siam ).
