Mohsen Makhmalbāf ( Persian محسن مخملباف; * May 29, 1957 in Tehran ) is an Iranian film director and author . His films have been shown many times at international film festivals and have received many recognized international film awards .

biography

Makhmalbāf was born into a poor family in southern Tehran . Between the ages of 8 and 17, Makhmalbāf had 13 different activities. In 1974 Makhmalbāf was arrested for trying to disarm a police officer. He was only released from prison after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Shortly afterwards he left politics and focused on the cultural area in Iran. So he started writing books and making films. Today he has published more than 27 books, many of which have already been translated into more than ten languages. His films have also been shown in more than 40 countries. However, some films have been banned in Iran. Even the director Abbas Kiarostami had built his film Close-up on Makhmalbāf's popularity in Iran.

In recent years he had also encouraged and taught his family members to make films. His wife Marziyeh Meshkini has made two successful films so far and his older daughter Samirā Makhmalbāf even received the jury's prize at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2003 for five o'clock in the afternoon . His younger daughter Hanā Makhmalbāf and his son Maysam Makhmalbāf have also made a film each. Makhmalbāf also founded a non-governmental organization that aims to enable Afghan children to go to school in Iran . Due to a change in Iranian law due to his campaign, which was also discussed in his film Reise nach Kandehar , tens of thousands of Afghan refugee children have now been able to go to school in Iran. His foundation continued to help build schools and hospitals there. Today Mohsen Makhmalbāf works internationally for the current opposition movement in the Islamic Republic of Iran and lives in exile in Paris.
