The following 23 films, all from different countries, were nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 1980 Academy Awards . The highlighted titles were the five ultimately nominated films from France, Italy, Poland, Spain and the Federal Republic of Germany. The Oscar went to the West German contribution Die Blechtrommel .

For the first time, a contribution from China was submitted for this award.
