Vera's Upbringing (Original title: Angi Vera ) is the title of a Hungarian film from 1979 that deals with the self- inflicting rituals of Stalinism .

content

19-year-old Vera Angi (the family name is always put in front in Hungarian) is a young auxiliary nurse in Hungary in 1948. One becomes aware of her in the Communist Party , which has just seized power, when, although shy, she herself reports to a meeting and criticizes grievances in hospital operations. The orphan with proletarian origins corresponds exactly to the profile that the new rulers of Hungary are looking for in order to replace the old upper classes with new, own people. Vera is therefore invited to take part in a six-month training course run by the party.

The pretty, ambitious and intelligent but politically naive girl joins the tough and ascetic party bureaucrat Anna Trajan in the course. Another course participant falls in love with Vera, but her erotic ambition is more directed towards István Andre, the course instructor, a family man. The attraction is mutual, there is an erotic encounter. Vera makes this “misconduct”, for which she publicly blames herself, the topic in a session of criticism and self-criticism . István then confesses to his love for Vera, but is now publicly rejected by Vera and subsequently deposed as a course instructor.

Vera Angi is then rejected by the other course participants, but she remains true to her line and the party she promotes. She collapses on stage at the graduation ceremony at the end of the course. In the final scene of the film you can see Anna taking Trajan in the car: the party has decided to train the promising young woman to be a journalist.

backgrounds

The film "Vera's Education" is, not least because of the excellent performance of the leading actress Veronika Pap and the sovereign direction of Pál Gábor and the camera work (Lajos Koltai), a first-rate work in Hungarian film of the 1970s. The scenes depicting the gatherings in which the humiliating rituals of self-infliction are practiced are of particular density and tension.

Reviews

“A bitterly angry story of 'growing up', told in warm colors and a relaxed rhythm. Since the main character's motivation is never clearly clarified, the viewer is challenged to give his own opinion. "

Awards

The film received the Silver Shell for best director at the San Sebastian Film Festival (1979) and the audience award for best film at the Sao Paulo Festival of the same year.

At the 1979 Cannes Film Festival , Vera's upbringing was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize .
