The Minin Street ( Russian Улица Минина ) is one of the oldest streets in the center of Nizhny Novgorod . The street connects two central squares: Minin and Poscharsky Square and Sennaya Square and has some green areas. The length is about 1.7 kilometers. The street is an important traffic junction in the city and is therefore well connected to public and private transport.

Name and story

In the 17th century, the wealthy Possad citizens Dmitri and Gavrila Zhukovi lived on this street , after whom the street got its first name. During the Soviet era it was renamed "Universitetskaya" (University Street), because at that time many higher education institutions, including the R.J. Alexeyev State Technical University in Nizhny Novgorod, were built on this street. During the Second World War , the street was named after the name of the folk hero Kusma Minin in order to raise the morale of the citizens in the fight against fascism . The historical design of the street could be preserved into the 21st century, because there are still no high-rise buildings there.

Well-known buildings

In the Soviet era, prominent and high-ranking personalities from the city of Gorky, as Nizhny Novgorod was called, lived in house No. 1 (also known as the “House of Government”). The house was built in 1937 by the architect Alexander Yakovlev and today it is a fine example of the so-called “Stalin architecture” or “ socialist classicism ”. House No. 4 was built in 1851 and then belonged to a merchant family. The building is remarkable because the city's first telephone exchange was established there in 1885. Next door, in house number 6, is the municipal department of the Writers' Union of Russia. Just like the neighboring house, the building belonged to a wealthy merchant family in the 19th century and is still provided with beautiful decorative elements (such as on the old staircase). Building № 8a, which today belongs to one of the largest Russian banks « VTB », was built at the beginning of the 20th century for the rich Russian ship owner Dmitri Sirotkin. In the house, among other things, he had set up a prayer room for Old Believers with unusual wall paintings. Some of these unique paintings have been exposed and restored. Today, however, only bank employees can enjoy this, as this room is not open to the public. After the October Revolution , the house was used differently at different times: as a children's home, as a museum of atheism and as an art school. Noteworthy is the white building of the R. E. Alekseev State Technical University (house number 24, building number 3). In 1852 the Institute for Higher Daughters, the first educational institution for women in Nizhny Novgorod, was established there.

Museums

The sky-blue house No. 26, formerly the villa of Varvara Burgomistrowa, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. At the end of the 19th century a garden with an arbor, a fountain, many sculptures and exotic flowers, fruits and vegetables was laid out behind the house, which is difficult to imagine today. The Maxim Gorki State Literature Museum has been located in this house since 1934, and various cultural events are regularly held here.

Educational institutions

There are many higher education institutions on Minin Street: the NA Dobrolyubov State Linguistic University, the R. E. Alekseev State Technical University, the State Academy of Waterways Transport of the Volga Region.
