The Nizhny Novgorod Metro ( Russian: Нижегородский метрополитен Nischegorodski metropoliten ) is the metro of the fifth largest Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod and was opened in 1985 . There are currently two lines with 15 stations and a route length of around 21.6 kilometers.

The central traffic junction for local public transport is located at the main station " Moskauer Bahnhof " ( Moskowski ). The metro has a connection to the S-Bahn ( Elektritschka ) at the Moskovskaya junction . This is also where eight lines of the Nizhny Novgorod tram end , which connect the old town on the eastern bank of the Oka and the southern and western parts of the city away from the underground line.

history

In the 1970s, Gorki , as the city had been called since 1932, began to discuss the construction of a metro. The first plans for the first eight underground stations were also drawn up. In 1976 the city fathers made the decision to build a subway network. On the one hand, the tram had reached its capacity limits, on the other hand, the forecasts said that the population of the city would increase from 1.35 to 1.6 million by 1990.

The first ramming took place on December 17, 1977 at the Leninskaya station (Ленинская). After that, a memorial plaque was inaugurated at this point , which was supposed to document the tenth underground system of the Soviet Union . The line on the first line, which was marked in red as usual in Russia, was opened after eight years of construction on November 20, 1985 between the stations of Moskovskaya (Московская) and Proletarskaya (Пролетарская) with four intermediate stations and a length of 7.8 kilometers Put into operation. In addition, the depot at the Proletarskaya station and the administration and technical center were opened. This line connected the "Moscow Railway Station" with the three industrial areas of the city, the Kanavino district, the Lenin district and the Avtosavodsky district.

Metro bridge over the Oka

The opening of the metro, more precisely the opening date, triggered a series of scandals because the opening ceremony was planned for November 7th, the 68th anniversary of the October Revolution . However, for unknown reasons, the opening was delayed by two weeks, which is why, as they say, the head of the Gorky metro construction company wanted to be arrested. Nevertheless, a grand opening took place on November 7th. The authorities took a look at the metro, but the line was only opened to passengers two weeks later.

On August 8, 1987, the line was extended by two stations. It now ended 1.9 km further south at the new Komsomolskaya station (Комсомольская). Two years later it was expanded in the same direction by two more stations to Park Kultury (Парк Культуры) station. All stations were built using the open construction method. On November 4, 2012, the line was extended to the east. Since then, the red line has crossed the Oka in the basement of a double-decker bridge and reaches its new end point at the new Gorkovskaya station (Горьковская). The bridge construction work began in 2001, and commissioning should take place in 2011.

The small network of the city of Nizhny Novgorod is to be expanded further in the future. So far, the plan is to expand the network, which is around 18.9 km long, up to 60 kilometers. The current red line will then stop at two further stations to the east, which will be called Ploshchad Swobody (Площадь Свободы, Freedom Square) and Sennaya Ploschad (Сенная Площадь).

Line 2

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the construction of new subway stations was delayed and the financial resources were no longer in abundance, but on December 20, 1993, eight years after the first subway opened, the second new subway was built again rückbenannten Nizhny Novgorod with the two stations now -track Kanawinskaja (Канавинская) and Burnakowskaja (Бурнаковская) commissioned. Since then, changing to the red line has been possible at Moskovskaya station with two directional platforms, but is currently not necessary. The operating procedures are regulated there in such a way that trains coming from the first red line continue on the blue line after a driver change.

On September 9, 2002, another station was opened on the second blue line: Burewestnik station (Буревестник, petrels).

When operations opened in 1985, four trains from the Wagonmasch factory of type 81-717 / 714 were delivered. Identical trains also run in Budapest , Prague and Warsaw . They drive with a busbar attached to the side and coated from below with a voltage of 825 volts, which is common in ex-Soviet metros  . Today there are around twenty four-car trains, all of which are used during rush hour . All trains are parked in the depot south of the Proletarskaya station, which can be reached via a 450-meter double-track connection.

In 2002 around 60 million passengers were carried.

On June 12, 2018, the new Strelka (Стрелка) metro station opened. It is located near the stadium where the 2018 World Cup will be played. In the vicinity of the metro station there are also several shopping centers ( Metro , Decathlon and Sedmoe Nebo), the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral , the fair and the headland of Nizhny Novgorod .

The stretch of the blue line should also be extended, here even in both directions. In the north it should run as far as the Volga , but the second line is also to have new stations in the west. In the long term, a third line, probably with the color code green or yellow, is planned on the other bank of the Oka. It should run roughly parallel to the red line. At the moment, however, the financing of new metro lines is made more difficult by the fact that part of the already modest funds available have to be invested in the renewal of some dilapidated tunnel sections.
