The cathedral building later served as a warehouse and partly as an apartment. The cathedral added numerous side rooms and various offices. There were warehouses in the basement of the temple. During the Second World War , an anti-aircraft battery was installed on the central open dome of the cathedral, which protected the sky over Gorky (name of Nizhny Novgorod during the Soviet era) from air forces .
