Fate (المصير, DMG al-Maṣīr ) is a 1997 Egyptian-French film directed by Youssef Chahine .

action

Ibn Ruschd, Commentary on De anima des Aristotle, French manuscript from the end of the 13th century.

The film is set in Arabian Andalusia in the 12th century. The scholar Averroes (Arabic Ibn Ruschd ) is the chief judge and advisor to the Caliph el-Mansur. He lives a life full of wisdom, love and tolerance with his family and students. The caliph, beset by the growing influence of Christians and radical Islamic sects, increasingly distanced himself from him, and finally had his writings burned and Ibn Ruschd banished. Ibn Ruschd's students have meanwhile copied his books and saved them abroad.

Reviews

"A courageous parable on the erosion of tolerance and enlightenment through the advance of fundamentalist ideas, which shows clear analogies to current developments in the Middle East."
