Mohamed Mounir ( Arabic محمد منير Muḥammad Munīr ; * October 10, 1954 in Aswan ) is an Egyptian musician whose style combines Arabic music with pentatonic Nubian melodies and elements of pop , funk and rock .

Life

Born and raised in Aswan, Mounir went to Cairo in 1971 to study film and photography . After his military service he turned to music and within a few years became an idol, especially for left-wing students.

In doing so, Mounir first broke with tradition when he appeared in front of his audience dressed in western clothing and in the manner of a pop star . There was also no typical Arab orchestra in the background, but a band of up to twelve people with Western and Arabic musical instruments.

Mounir lives in the Garden City district of Cairo .

music

The reason for his success is the combination of the traditional Sufi music of his homeland, the Nubian -influenced Upper Egypt, with elements from rock, pop and funk . With this style he became the founder of Egyptian pop music. His love songs and ballads quickly made him socially acceptable, so that his music is still played at parties and weddings today.

One of the main sources of his musical success is the adaptation of traditional Nubian songs and especially of compositions by the singer, poet and oud player Ahmad Mounib (1926–1991) into Arabic.

The popularity of the progressive students can be traced back to the introduction of the protest song, songs in which he expresses his, sometimes massive, criticism of society, politics and religion.

After the attacks in New York , he fell with his video clip maddad on, in which he critically the impact on the image of Islam through mosques and media scrutiny. As a result, this clip was boycotted by most Arab broadcasters. This song was arranged for him by the German musician Roman Bunka . From 1984 Bunka repeatedly arranged songs for him, as a guitarist and oud player he accompanied him at concerts and in the studio.

His fame also gave him his breakthrough as an actor . With the " enfant terrible " of Egyptian film, Youssef Chahine , he made several films, including the film Das Schicksal , which was nominated for the Palme d' Or .

Through contacts with western musicians, Mohamed Mounir repeatedly comes to concerts in Europe. In 2003 he was on tour with Hubert von Goisern , including in Germany.

In 2009 Mounir sang the title "Yasmine" on the new album by Ich + Ich together with Adel Tawil . The title was also Berlin's contribution to the Bundesvision Song Contest 2010 , which took place on October 1, 2010 and in which he and Ich + Ich took third place with 100 points.

In 2017 Mounir collaborated again with Adel Tawil: On his album So schön anders he sang the title "One World One Home" with Tawil and Youssou N'Dour .
