Nour El-Sherif or Nour El-Sharif ( Arabic نور الشريف, DMG Nūr aš-Šarīf ; actually Mohammad Jaber ; * April 28, 1946 in Cairo , in the poor district of Sayyida Zainab ; † August 11, 2015 ) was an Egyptian actor and director .

Life

Nour El-Sherif's father died a year after his birth at the age of 26. El-Sherif gained his first experience as an actor during his school days, with a theater group in high school. After working as a professional soccer player at Zamalek SC in the Egyptian league , he first turned to commercial training, but broke it off and then studied acting . He finished his studies as the best of his year.

From 1972 to 2006 El-Sherif was married to the actress Poussi , with whom he had two daughters (Sarah and May). Sarah is now also active in the film and television industry. In December 2014, the two married again.

Acting career and directing debut

After a minor role in Ash-shawaree Alkhalfiyya (The Back Streets ) , directed by Saad Ardash , the lead role followed in Kamal Eid's production of Romeo and Juliet .

During rehearsals for Romeo and Juliet , El-Sherif met the actor Adel Imam , who later suggested him to the director Hassan Imam for a leading role in the film adaptation of Nagib Mahfuz 's novel Qasrel Shoou (Palace of Longing) . This role earned him further recognition and in 1972 he played it again in the sequel Assukariyya ( Sugar Lane ), also written by Nagib Mahfuz .

He then took part in more than 157 films, 16 plays and 17 television series, in which he mostly played the leading role. He received international praise in 1997 for the role of Averroes in Youssef Chahine's film Destiny and in 2006 for the role of a corrupt and sex-addicted politician in the hit movie The Yacoubian Building .

In 2008 he caused a sensation in the Arab world when he was filmed naked for a torture scene during the shooting of The Babydoll Night , which would later become the box-office hit and the most successful film in Arab cinema history , which the Egyptian censorship authorities reported called the plan.

In 2001 El-Sherif made his directorial debut with the film Al Asheqan (The Two In Love) , in which he also played the lead role together with his then wife Poussi. He had previously staged the play Al Kahen (The Monk) .
