Adel Imam

Adel Imam ( Arabic عادل إمام, DMG ʿĀdil Imām ; * May 17, 1940 , according to other sources December 17, 1946 in al-Mansura ) is an Egyptian actor.

Life

Adel Imam is considered a student of the Egyptian actor Fouad El Mouhandes . He has acted in over a hundred films and is a popular actor in the Arab world . Most of them are comedies. In 2005 he played a leading role in the film adaptation of the popular novel Imarat Yaqubian ( The Yacoubian Building ) by Ala al-Aswani . The controversial film was a huge box office hit. Another controversial film in which he stars is the religious comedy Hassan and Markus (2008), directed by his son Ramy.

Adel Imam has been a UN special envoy since 2000 .

In 2012 a court sentenced Adel Imam to three months' imprisonment and a $ 170 fine for insulting Islam . He was accused of making fun of Islam in a 2007 film and 1998 play. In the film he played a corrupt businessman, in the play an Arab dictator . He is said to have made religious symbols such as beards and flowing clothing contemptible. The guilty verdict against Adel Imam was pronounced shortly after the victory of Islamic parties after the revolution in Egypt in 2011 in the first free elections in six decades. A later instance confirmed the judgment.
