Journey to the beginning of the world (original Portuguese title "Viagem ao Princípio do Mundo") is a 1997 film by the Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira . It was the last film by the actor Marcello Mastroianni, who died in 1996 .

action

An aging director returns to Portugal to look for traces of his origins in the north of the country. Accompanied by an actor of Portuguese origin and two other actors, they drive through the stages of his childhood in the car, always having the opportunity to talk, for example about transience, wisdom or fate.

reception

The emphatically simple, poetic film about an aging director from the north of Portugal has strong autobiographical traits from Oliveira, who himself plays a supporting role as a driver. The film impresses with its successful photography and the calm narrative style, but also with its convincing acting. Here again Mastroianni should be emphasized: aware of his advanced disease, he accepted the role as his last, and played it easily and soulfully.

The film won several prizes, including the Globo de Ouro and two FIPRESCI awards , a. a. at the Cannes Film Festival .
