Tsai Ming-Liang ( Chinese  蔡明亮 , Pinyin Cài Míngliàng , born October 27, 1957 in Kuching , Malaysia ) is a Chinese-Malaysian film director active in Taiwan .

After completing his studies, he began making films as a television director. With his second film Vive l'Amour - Long Live Love , he won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1994 . He received the Silver Bear at the 1997 Berlinale for his film The River .

Inspired by François Truffaut and his often leading actor Jean-Pierre Léaud , actor Lee Kang-sheng plays the male lead in all of Tsai Ming-Liang's films . In 2009 he received an invitation to compete at the 62nd Cannes International Film Festival for Visage , which he directed with Léaud, Jeanne Moreau and Fanny Ardant , among others .

In 2020 Tsai received an invitation to compete at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival for his film Rizi (日子 / Days ) .
