Lubna Azabal (* 1973 in Brussels , Belgium ) is a Belgian- Moroccan - Spanish actress .

biography

Azabal is the daughter of a Moroccan and a Spaniard. She was raised in three languages ​​(French, Spanish and Berber ). She also speaks English, Flemish and Arabic.

Lubna Azabal attended both the private drama school de Kleine Academie and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles) in Brussels . She started her acting career at the theater. In 1996 she got her first role in a film. In 1997 she was cast by Belgian filmmaker Vincent Lannoo for his short film J'adore le Cinéma . She then moved to Paris and played mainly in French cinema and TV productions.

She was best known for her role in the Palestinian political drama Paradise Now , which won the audience award at the Berlinale in 2005 and the Golden Globe in 2006 and was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2006. After the great success of Paradise Now , she was also offered roles in English-language big-budget cinema productions. In 2008 she initially got a smaller role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in the US thriller The Man Who Never Lived , in 2011 she then played alongside Gerard Butler , Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave in the British historical drama Coriolanus .

In 2011 she again achieved international recognition when she was named Best Female Lead Actress in Incendies at the Genie Awards , the Canadian equivalent to the Academy Awards . The drama received a total of eight Genie Awards , including best film and best director, and was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in the same year. For her portrayal in Tueurs (2017) she was awarded the Belgian Magritte Film Prize for Best Actress in 2019 .

In 2009 she moved back to Belgium from Paris.
