Laïla Marrakchi (born December 10, 1975 in Casablanca ) is a Moroccan director and screenwriter .

Laïla Marrakchi completed a college education with the DEA in cinematography. After various assistant directorships, she brought her first short film L'Horizon perdu to the screening in 2000 . Two documentary films followed in 2001 ( Femmes en royaume and Derrière les portes du hammam ) before on the 2002 International Festival of French cinema in Namur with Deux cents dirhams presented another short film, which like the previous with everyday life in Morocco is concerned. Another short film followed in 2003, Momo mambo . L'Horizon perdu received an award at the Torino Festival of Young Films in Turin in 2000, and Deux cents dirhams in 2003 at the International Short Film Festival in Tampere .

Laïla Marrakchi became known for her first full-length feature film, Marock , which was produced in 2004 and featured in a special category at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2005, and which also incorporated her own youthful experiences. He deals with the life of young people from the Moroccan upper class in Casablanca at the end of the 1990s and tells the story of a young Muslim woman who tries to approach a Jewish classmate and the influences of her family, which is not very religious but has traditional roots. Marock was released at the beginning of 2006 and was also shown at the Jewish Film Festival Vienna in 2007 .

Laïla Marrakchi is a Muslim and married to Alexandre Aja , French director, screenwriter and film producer and Sephardic Jew .
