Diplôme d'études approfondies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diplôme d'études approfondies ( DEA ) is a French university diploma of the third cycle, which also existed in other francophone countries and in Spain until the changeover to the Bologna system. It was introduced in France in 1964 and became obsolete as part of the Bolognese reform . It was therefore not replaced by the master’s degree, but was rather reissued in that the DEA courses, which were discontinued as a result of the Bologna process, were continued as post -graduate masters of the second cycle, as so-called Master de spécialisation à finalité recherche or à finalité approfondie . While the DESS ( diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées ) represented a job-related postgraduate university degree, the profile of a DEA, in contrast to the DESS, represented a research-oriented postgraduate course in the francophone-speaking area.

In France, the DEA was acquired within a year after the so-called maîtrise before starting the doctorate. The DEA was a preparation for the doctorate and was considered the "first doctoral degree". It is not to be confused with a professional doctorate, which represents the completion of an undergraduate degree instead of a diploma, master's degree or the like and is assigned to the second cycle of studies.

In the French-speaking part of Belgium , the DEA was acquired after the so-called license. The license represented the university degree after a full course of study, so it was the counterpart to the French maîtrise and corresponds to a master’s degree according to the Bologna classification. The advanced and specialized DEA course lasted one to two years and qualified for admission to a doctorate. The doctorate then lasted at least three, but normally four years and represented more extensive and more profound research than was necessary for a doctorate to obtain a doctorate according to German standards.

Because of its research study character, the DEA is assigned to level 8 of ISCED : Doctoral or equivalent level. The DEA required the writing of a dissertation ( mémoire ) with original research on a previously unexplored topic of publishable quality, which represents a significant contribution to knowledge in the respective field of study, as well as the public oral defense ( défense ) of this dissertation before a committee of, as a rule at least three university professors. In addition, the DEA also required the study of subjects based on university courses (totaling at least 315 hours in Belgium) plus further in-depth self-study and the successful completion of the respective final exams in each individual subject.

The DEA existed and partly still exists, as well as the DESS ( diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées ), in numerous other countries, which based their education system on the French one. These include, for example, Canada ( Québec ), Belgium , Luxembourg , Switzerland , Lebanon , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the North African countries Algeria , Morocco and Tunisia . The DEA cannot be seen directly as a counterpart to the British-American master’s degree, as these master’s degrees differ in terms of their educational level and the organization of the studies. In North America, the DEA corresponds to a degree between " All but dissertation" (ABD) or "PhD candidate" and the actual " PhD" , which takes four to five years of research there.
