action

In the middle of winter in Belgium it is an exceptional 25 degrees on one day. The Spaniard Miguel is on the highway to Brussels in his small van to take his daughter Laura to school. Miguel's wife left for the United States some time ago. Due to a truck accident, however, a long traffic jam has formed, so he takes Laura to school on foot. When he returns, a Ukrainian woman named Sonia is sitting in the car and asks him for help. She is staying illegally in Belgium to visit her lover Yevgeny.

He takes her into his apartment. When the landlord rings the doorbell because Miguel has high rental debts, they both flee through the window. He drives past a bookmaker and bets 150 euros on a 4-0 win by Real Madrid against FC Barcelona because he dreamed of exactly this result last night. He then receives a call from his mother Abuelita and learns that his daughter Laura is being treated at the hospital after a scramble at school.

Now the four of them are sitting in the car and decide to drive Sonia to her boyfriend's address. However, he no longer lives there. In the former apartment, Miguel comforts Sonia and the first tenderness occurs. A resident of the house gives them a new address, but Sonia's friend cannot be found either. After all, they receive information from their current residence. The fully occupied car is now going there. Sonia confronts Yevgeny and learns that he is now in a relationship with another woman named Estelle.

Deeply disappointed, Sonia walks along the beach, where Miguel and Laura just found out over the phone that Miguel's wife is no longer interested in the marriage. Miguel and Sonia embrace and kiss. On the return trip, the radio broadcast of the Real Madrid soccer match against FC Barcelona. Real just made it 4-0.

Reviews

“The over-the-top film not only shows the clichés of life in a small multi-cultural country to excess, but is so hectically staged that every emerging feeling and every thoughtful situation is steered in a different direction with new, supposedly funny gags become."

“Stéphane Vuillet's film is a comical tragedy that is touching without being kitschy, also because Vuillet naturally integrates the comedy into the film. All the main actors reveal their suffering without appearing pathetic and without addressing it. The unspoken tells more about the characters than the entertaining and brisk dialogues. [...] Accompanied by flamenco sounds, 25 degrees develops a dynamic in winter that one hopes to find more often in European cinema. "

- Critic.de

“The successful tragicomedy is the film debut of the French cameraman and short film director Stéphane Vuillet, who lives in Belgium and who staged his tragicomedy in the style of his great role model Pedro Almodóvar . With a lot of empathy, a good dose of humor and sometimes surprising images, Vuillet shows the entanglements in the lives of his four protagonists, which he never exposes. The acting performances of Jacques Gamblin as Miguel and Carmen Maura as his crazy mother are worth seeing. "

Awards

The film ran at the Berlinale in 2004 in the competition for the Golden Bear , and was ultimately awarded the prize of the reading jury of the Berliner Morgenpost .
