The Unity type , also known as the Unity class, is a Liberty replacement ship type , which was developed in the late 1960s by the Cockerill shipyard in Hoboken , Belgium as a replacement for the then aging fleet of Liberty freighters and Victory ships .

details

In the second half of the 1960s, various types of ships were offered around the world as replacements for the Liberty and Victory standard freighters still in service, as well as some other cargo ships built during the Second World War, in the world merchant fleet at that time, which were on intermediate decks with their own loading gear and approx. 14,000 tons load-bearing capacity oriented. Series such as SD-14 , Freedom or German Liberty were particularly successful, but others, such as the Pioneer or Unity types, only achieved lower editions.

The ship type was developed in the late 1960s by the Amsterdam ship engineering office Sea Transport Engineering , a joint subsidiary of the shipping company Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij and the engine manufacturer Stork / Werkspoor . The design initially presented provided for a division with three cargo holds and four hatches, and a cargo hold and a hatch behind the superstructures, which were about seven eighths aft. The Unity ships, which were ultimately built by the Belgian Cockerill shipyard, had four holds with tween decks, four hatches and a volume of 22,495 m³ (bulk cargo) and 20,787 m³ (general cargo). Three of the holds were in front, one hold behind the superstructures about three quarters aft. In the first six constructions, 16 cargo booms with 3/5 tonnes were available as their own loading gear; in the case of the two replicas, these were supplemented by a stilted heavy lift gear .

The first six ships of the type, Mosa Pijade , Sibenik , Marko Oreskovic , Matija Ivanic , Promina and Matija Gubec , were built in 1969/70 for the Yugoslav shipping company Jadranska Slobodna Plovidba in Split .

In 1979, almost ten years later, Cockerill delivered two more ships, which were equipped with heavier loading gear , Balder Antwerp and Balder Gent . The two ships had originally been commissioned by the Scaldis shipping company, which went bankrupt before completion. The shipyard completed the ships on its own account and gave them to the newly founded charter shipping company Bulk Chartering, which was specially founded for these ships. The actual operation was in the hands of the Norwegian shipping company Parley Augustsson A / S. Five years later, Bulk Chartering also went bankrupt and the two ships were bought by auction by the Vroon shipping company from Breskens.
