The Blohm & Voss Type Pioneer is a Liberty replacement ship type that was developed by the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in the mid-1960s as a replacement for the then aging fleet of Liberty freighters and Victory ships and built until 1986. The name "Pioneer" of this type, which was built 19 times, stands for the then completely new type of construction.

history

In the mid-1960s, around 700 of the Liberty and Victory standard freighters, as well as a few other cargo ships built during World War II, were still in service in the then world merchant fleet. Even the youngest of them were now 20 years or older, and so both the shipping companies and the shipyards were faced with the question of replacing these ships, which would soon reach the end of their service life.

The major upheavals in maritime shipping, caused by the appearance of container ships and bulk carriers , which would later almost completely replace the general cargo ships , were not completely predictable at this point in time, so that the classic general cargo ship , which in its form at that time had been with relatively few since the turn of the century Changes was built, still appeared current.

It was therefore surprising that Blohm & Voss is in his plans for the new ship type, unlike many other shipyards with their successful type ships SD-14 , German Liberty , Trampko , Seebeck 36L , Freedom and Fortune , far from the layout of these classic cargo ships with own loading gear and approx. 14,000 tons load capacity removed. What caught the eye first was the new design of the hull made of flat surfaces, completely dispensing with deformed plates, which should make the construction much easier and cheaper to manufacture, since the shipyard did not need large presses or curved jigs.

The "Pioneer Multicarrier System" developed by Blohm & Voss provided for the extensive use of standardized identical parts in the construction of over 100 possible versions of the "Pioneer". The common parts system included prefabricated hull sections for heavy lift or general cargo ships with their own loading gear, bulk carriers, car transporters with suspended decks in four versions, each with a load capacity of approx. 16,000 dwt, 18,000 dwt, 20,000 dwt and 22,000 dwt or full container ship with 8 400 dwt / 520 TEU as well as a semi-container freighter.

Less conspicuous, but far more progressive, was the "M 1000 furnishing system" with standardized components for the interior fittings of the deckhouse, newly developed by the shipyard in collaboration with Arno Votteler from the State University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig . This made it possible to prefabricate the parts for the interior fittings on land and then to insert them into a modular steel frame system as ready-to-connect building blocks.

Despite the relatively expensive production at Blohm & Voss, the calculated construction price should be 10% or more below that of comparable tonnage thanks to the new construction method, thus making the financing of this larger type of ship possible for the rather small shipping companies that many of the Liberty ships still in service. and Victory ships operated at this time.

The first cargo ship of the "Pioneer" type, the Jag Dev , was launched on May 7, 1968 as hull number 574 of the Lübeck Flender-Werke , and then on June 24, 1968 after completion at Blohm & Voss as its hull number 862 to the Great Eastern Shipping Co., Bombay.

Blohm & Voss followed on December 30, 1968 with construction number 866, Normannia , on June 14, 1969 with construction number 863, the Jag Darshan , Die Iberia and finally on December 5, 1970 the Dalmatia .

The Indian shipyard Hindustan Shipyard in Vizagapatnam made 14 more replicas between November 1975 ( Jagat Priya ) and 1986 ( State of Orissa ).

The Pioneer type was always chalked up for its unusual appearance, but it was not a big hit, mainly because, despite its innovative design, both the attention to detail in the construction and the excessive wealth of variants did not allow for a really competitive construction price.

The modular system for interior construction launched with the Pioneer type was, however, a success.
