Maryam Touzani ( Arabic مريم التوزاني, DMG Maryam at-Tūzānī ; * July 18, 1980 in Tangier ) is a Moroccan film actress , screenwriter and film director .

Life

Maryam Touzani was born in Tangier in 1980, where she spent her youth. After studying in London, she began working as a journalist specializing in cinema. She then became a screenwriter and director of short and documentary films. In 2011 her short film Quand ils dorment (When They Sleep) is her first film. In 2014 she made the documentary Sous Ma Vieille Peau about prostitution in Morocco. This documentary turned into the film Much Loved , which was released in 2015, directed by Nabil Ayouch and in which Touzani was involved in the script. In 2015 she made her second short film Aya va à la plage (Aya goes to the beach) about the exploitation of young children as domestic workers.

She is the first actress in the 2017 film Razzia , which she wrote with her husband, director Nabil Ayouch, and in which she plays Salima, one of the leading roles.

In 2019 she directed her first feature film, Adam . This was selected for the Cannes Film Festival , in the Un Certain Regard section , in the Queer Palm competition and at the 12th Angoulême Francophone Film Festival .
