Tony Gatlif (* 10. September 1948 in Algiers , Algeria as Michel Dahmani ) is a French director , actor , screenwriter , composer and film producer .

Life

Tony Gatlif was born in 1948 in Algeria, then part of France . His father was Kabyle , his mother Roma . Both cultures influenced him strongly and inspired a large part of his films.

Gatlif left Algeria in the early 1960s and emigrated to France to take acting classes after studying art. Gatlif finally came to film through acting and theater and presented his first screenplay, La Rage au Poing . In 1975 he shot La Tête en ruine , his first film as a director.

His film Exils won the Director's Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival .
