action

15-year-old Charley Thompson lives with his father in Oregon in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Charley's mother left her when he was little, and Ray has become a single dad and grumpy person who drinks beer all day. Even if he loves his son, he can neither give him money nor real attention, because he hardly manages to take responsibility for himself or to keep a job. This was also the reason why they recently moved to Portland from Spokane and now live in a house that is more like a garbage dump. Ray also broke off contact with his sister Margy.

While exploring the neighborhood, Charley passes the Portland Meadows Racetrack one morning, just a few blocks from his new home. He has never sat on a horse before and is completely fascinated by the imposing animals. The horse trainer Del Montgomery becomes aware of the boy and offers him that he can help him with his work for a few dollars. Together they prepare the horses for races, most of which are ridden by Del's favorite jockey Bonny, who has already sustained a number of injuries and has become cynical about them.

Lean on Pete is an American Quarter Horse

From the beginning, Charley is particularly captivated by one of the horses, which is called Lean on Pete. The five-year-old is an ordinary American Quarter Horse , and actually nothing special. While his father no longer cares about him at all and he has little else to do with people, Charley's affection for this horse grows day by day.

Del has a reputation for tearing his horses to the blood and selling them to a Mexican slaughterhouse when they run out of profit. When he also wants to sell Lean on Pete, Charley steals the animal one night and sets off with him towards Canada. He wants to go looking for his aunt Margy, whom he hasn't seen for years. She is said to live in Wyoming and is the only loving and maternal character he can remember in his life. Charley and Lean on Pete roam the country like migrant workers. The boy does not ride on the back of his four-legged friend, but runs alongside him the whole time and tells him his life story. Destitute, they roam from one city to the next through the desert. Here they meet good people like Silver, who gives food to the homeless, but also a couple who only seemingly unselfishly offer him their hospitality.

production

Novel and staff

The film is based on the novel Lean on Pete by Willy Vlautin from 2010, which was praised by critics in the US often, including by fellow writer Cheryl Strayed , whose best-selling memoir Wild also filmed and filmed in Oregon. The director took Andrew Haigh , who also Vlautins novel for the film adapted. During a visit to the Zurich Film Festival , Haigh said that, as is customary with novel adaptations, it was a challenge to get the story together and to do without things, which is not always easy: “The film now has two parts: the time Charlie spends on the racecourse, and the time of his journey with the horse. ”It was important to him, Haigh continues, that it is not a film about a boy and his horse, but a film about a boy.

Cast and filming

Charlie Plummer plays the leading role the teenager Charley Thompson, who goes in search of his aunt in the film. Travis Fimmel played Ray and Chloë Sevigny played Bonnie. Thomas Mann stars as Lonnie and Steve Buscemi plays the horse owner Del, whom Charley Thompson met in the film. Rachael Perrell Fosket plays Martha, Frank Gallegos plays Santiago and Justin Rain plays Mike.

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Susanna Bonaséwicz on behalf of FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH, Berlin.

The filming took place in the settlement of Burns with only a few thousand inhabitants , on the racecourse in Portland Meadows , on a ranch in Molalla, in Hines and in Harney County in the US state of Oregon . Long stretches of the film show recordings of the vast landscapes of the high desert there. Haigh said they had very good animal trainers and that the most difficult thing was the technical aspect. Since you could only take the horses by the reins on one side, for example, this was sometimes not the side he wanted to film. Magnus Nordenhof Jønck acted as cameraman .

Film music and publication

The score was composed by James Edward Barker . The British film composer had previously worked with the director and sent him demos when he was already editing the film. To background music for the scenes in which cityscapes are shown, Barker used rather cold sounds, for the scenes with the racehorse warmer vibraphones and soft guitar sounds. Baker was recognized for his work at the Heartland Film Festival and the Festival de cinéma européen des Arcs. On April 27, 2018, Varese Sarabande released the soundtrack, which comprises a total of 11 pieces of music, as a download.

The film premiered on September 1, 2017 as part of the Venice Film Festival , where it was shown in the main competition. Also in September 2017, the film was shown at the Special Presentations at the Toronto International Film Festival . At the end of September and beginning of October 2017, the film was shown in official competition at the Zurich Film Festival and in December 2017 at the Festival de cinéma européen des Arcs. From March 9, 2018, the film was presented at the South by Southwest Film Festival . A24 distributes the film in the USA and brought it to selected cinemas there on April 6, 2018. The film was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on May 4, 2018. In June 2018 the film was shown at the Sydney Film Festival . A screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival is planned for August 2018.

Reviews

The film has so far won over 91 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.9 out of a possible 10 points. The acting performance of the young actor Charlie Plummer was highlighted again and again , especially because the inner monologues he leads in the role of Charley are only thought of in the novel, but he has to portray them in the film in terms of language and outwardly. David Sexton of the London Evening Standard says that the 18-year-old, who plays a 15-year-old, looks somewhat like a youthful Christopher Walken and shows a great presence in his role.

Even David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter says, is the real heart of the film of Plummer shown Charley, who on the most beautiful stretches of the film across one-way calls leads with his horse in which he reveals details of his life and of his desire for a full family told. Rooney compares the story told in Lean on Pete to Kelly Reichardt's almost excruciatingly astute film Wendy and Lucy , but also recognizes references to other distinctive films about Oregon travel, such as Gus Van Sant's My Private Idaho .

David Ehrlich of IndieWire explains that the further the story goes, the more memorable it becomes. However, the director does not forget the quote from John Steinbeck , which the author Willy Vlautin used as an epigraph for his novel: “It is true that we are weak and sick and ugly and argumentative, but if that is all we are , we would have disappeared from the earth thousands of years ago. ”Honestly, however, it is also reassured that the film is not as hard as it sounds.

In a review by Radio 3fach it is said that the director was particularly successful in showing Charlie's sensitive person in an environment that is quite rough and brutal.
