Zhang Yimou won the Golden Lion that year

The 56th Venice International Film Festival took place from September 1st to 11th, 1999. This year Alberto Barbera became the new festival director. He remained in this position until 2001.

The following jury was appointed for the competition: Emir Kusturica (jury president), Marco Bellocchio , Maggie Cheung , Jonathan Coe , Jean Douchet , Shozo Ichiyama , Arturo Ripstein and Cindy Sherman .
