The wind will carry us ( Persian باد ما را خواهد برد Bād Mā Rā Chāhad Bord ) is an Iranian film directed by Abbas Kiarostami . The title refers to a poem by the well-known, modern Iranian poet Forugh Farrochzad with the same title. The film premiered in 1999 at the Venice Film Festival , where it was nominated for the Golden Lion . The film won the Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize .

Three journalists travel to the Kurdish village of Siah Dareh, where they pretend to be treasure hunters, but are actually waiting for the death of an old woman to make a report on a Kurdish funeral ceremony. Since the death of the woman does not initially occur, contrary to expectations, the men’s stay is prolonged. The protagonist, known as the engineer , befriends a schoolboy and over time is drawn more and more into the life of the village.

The film was shot exclusively with amateur actors, the actors of the villagers come from the area around Siah Dareh. Behzad Dourani, who plays the engineer , is a lighting technician from Tehran . The engineer's two companions cannot be seen in the film.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews from the critics. The lexicon of international film writes : “Full of clever and humorous ideas, the qualities of a timeless cinema that does not domesticate the viewer are revealed here, ” the Stuttgarter Zeitung describes the film as a masterpiece, and Cinema magazine judges it: “clever, fascinating "Unique" However, some critics, such as Edward Guthmann of the San Francisco Chronicle, note that the film is lengthy in places.
