None less - Not One Less (Original title: 一个 都不能少 , Yī gè dōu bù néng shǎo) is a Chinese film drama by director Zhang Yimou about a substitute teacher in a Chinese village who, out of a sense of duty, is looking for one of her students in the nearest town, because he left school out of poverty and is looking for work in the city. The film shows the poverty in the Chinese rural population, which forces children to neglect their education in order to support their families.

action

The focus of the plot is the 13-year-old substitute teacher Wei Minzhi, who is commissioned by the original teacher in the village to use school materials sparingly, especially the chalk, as well as to take good care of her students and to keep them all together.

When one day the class clown Zhang Huike does not show up for class, the teacher dutifully and resolutely goes in search of him and learns from the sick mother that Zhang Huike has gone to town to get money to pay off the family's debts to earn. First of all, she and the other children in her class try to earn the money for a bus trip into town. Together with the children, she works out how much she needs for the return trip, how much money she can earn working in a brickworks and how long it will take. However, the bus trip costs more than she and the children can earn by working in the brickworks, and after a failed attempt to ride the fodder, she sets off on foot and hitchhiking into town on her own.

Once in town, Wei Minzhi tries unsuccessfully to find Zhang Huike via an exclamation point at the train station where he was last seen and via search form, which she later loses. Finally, after her persistent attempt to get in touch, the director of a television station feels sorry for her and allows her to be featured on a television show.

As a result of this call, the teacher finally reunites with the student she is looking for, and both are driven into the village with a camera team. As a result of the reporting, the two come back to the village with many donations in money and in kind. At the end of the film, some students in the class write words of hope and appreciation for their teacher on the blackboard with the colored chalk they donated.
