Unter-Hambach is a district of Heppenheim (Bergstrasse) in the Bergstrasse district in southern Hesse . It belongs to the Hambach district .

Geographical location

The village stretches for around 1500 meters in the Hambach Valley in the Odenwald . In the south the place is dominated by the ruins of Starkenburg , in the west by the 269 meter high Hubenhecke and in the east by the partly wooded, partly with vineyards, foothills of the Lindenstein , which at 455 meters is the highest point in the Unter-Hambach area . The development merges seamlessly down the valley in the west into the core town of Heppenheim, located on Bergstrasse .

history

The first surviving documentary mention as Heimbach dates back to around 1200. Niederheimbach and Oberheimbach are documented for the year 1487. Twelve watermills stood near the village and in the direction of Ober-Hambach , two kilometers away .

Until 1829, the two places in the Hambachtal were statistically recorded separately with regard to the number of inhabitants. In 1834 a population of the Hambach community was documented for the first time . From this it can be concluded that Nieder-Hambach and Ober-Hambach were administratively amalgamated at that time at the latest, but to this day while maintaining their own separate districts . In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Hambach decided to integrate into the city of Heppenheim before the end of 1971, whose district has been Unter-Hambach since then.
