Ober-Hambach is a district of Heppenheim in the Bergstrasse district in southern Hesse and belongs to its Hambach district .

Geographical location

The village is about two kilometers above Unter-Hambach . The small district of Ober-Hambach, surrounded by the Unter-Hambacher Wald, is a clearing island on the upper reaches of the Hambach in the Vorderen Odenwald .

history

Ober-Hambach was probably created in the 10th century. The first documented mention that has been preserved as Heimbach dates back to around 1200. Obernheimbach is documented for the year 1487. In order to use the water power of the Hambach, twelve mills were built.

Until 1829, Ober-Hambach and Nieder-Hambach were statistically recorded separately with regard to the number of inhabitants. In 1834 a population of the Hambach community was documented for the first time . From this it can be concluded that the two municipalities were administratively merged at the latest at that time, but to this day while maintaining their own separate districts. In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the Hambach community decided to integrate into the city of Heppenheim before the end of 1971, whose district has been Ober-Hambach since then.

In April 1910, Paul Geheeb and his wife Edith founded the Odenwald School , which was oriented towards reform pedagogy and existed until it was dissolved in 2015.

Culture

Until the 1970s there was a Marienkapelle at the entrance to Ober-Hambach . It had become dilapidated and had to be demolished. In order to continue the tradition of such a small place of reflection and prayer, a chapel association was founded, which received a plot of land in the upper village for 99 years on heritable building lease. The foundation stone was laid in March 2004 and the topping-out ceremony on September 1st.

The glass windows were designed and realized by the artist William Keaton. Elements from the immediate vicinity of the chapel are shown: the wood for the forest, the water of the stream, the fruits and the birds and a rose above the Madonna in the round window. Because the Hambachtal is also called the “valley of roses”. The entrance gate with the two crosses and the indicated stream was designed and forged by students in the teaching workshops of the Odenwald School. A statue of the Mother of God owned by the parish of Saint Michael found a new home here during the consecration on May 1, 2005.

On May 5, 2007, Bishop Karl Lehmann visited the chapel. The cardinal made up for the blessing, which he could only convey in writing for the inauguration with a greeting. The chapel attracts many festive events and celebrations throughout the year and has thus become the center of village life.

In May 1928 the painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff stayed for a few days in "Oberhambach im Odenwald".

traffic

The K 57 district road , which leads from Heppenheim via Unter-Hambach to Ober-Hambach, ends here and continues as an asphalt forest road to Schannenbach . This forest road is closed to traffic on Sundays and public holidays.
