Venice International Film Festival 1988
The 45th Venice International Film Festival took place from August 29 to September 9, 1988. Together with the Cannes International Film Festival and the Berlinale, they are among the most important film festivals in the world and were first held in the Italian city of Venice in 1932 .
At the 45th edition of the film festival, the main prize, the Golden Lion , went to the Italian director Ermanno Olmi for his literary film adaptation of The Legend of the Holy Drinker . However, the film The Last Temptation, which premiered outside of the competition, attracted the greatest attention . Martin Scorsese's adaptation of the novel The Last Temptation of Nikos Kazantzakis had sparked violent protests by the Catholic Church even before the premiere.

The Italian director Sergio Leone took over the chairmanship of the jury in the feature film competition . Nine other jury members were at his side:

Movies
A total of 22 films competed. Italy was represented with a total of five films (including two European co-productions ), France with four films (including three co-productions). Four films were American productions. Andrew Birkin's Burning Secret , an adaptation of Stefan Zweig 's novel of the same name, entered the race as a German-British collaborative effort . Switzerland was represented in the competition with the film À corps perdu - Unconscious by the French-Canadian Léa Pool .
For the Spaniard Pedro Almodóvar , his competition film Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown was the international breakthrough. He received the Osella for Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival. The Golden Lion for the best film went to the Italian production The Legend of the Holy Drinker , based on Joseph Roth 's novel of the same name . Ermanno Olmi was already considered the big favorite for the main prize during the ongoing competition.

- Osella - Best production design and costumes: Bernd Lepel (Burning Secret)
- Osella - Best Score : José María Vitier , Gianni Nocenzi and Pablo Milanés (Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormouses)
- Special lion for his life's work: Joris Ivens
