Adoor Gopalakrishnan ( Malayalam അടൂർ ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണൻ ; born July 3, 1941 in Adoor , Kerala ) is an Indian film director. His films are in his native Malayalam language . He is influenced by the works of Satyajit Ray .

Live and act

Adoor Gopalakrishnan was born in the Pathanamthitta district into a family of art connoisseurs and friends of the classical Kerald dance Kathakali , so it was not far that he had been employed in the theater from the age of eight . Immediately after completing his training at the film school in Pune , he and friends founded a production company for non-commercial films.

His first directorial work Swayamvaram (1972) won multiple awards in India. In contrast to the limited commercial cinema of Bollywood, which was restricted by censorship , Gopalakrishnan was able to work on socially critical topics freed from traditional barriers with his artistically ambitious films due to his relative independence.

Like West Bengal , Kerala has a long tradition of communist governments. And Gopalakrishnan has made several films with a political point of view against this background, such as Kodiyettam (1977) and Mukhamukham (1984).

All of his feature films have been shown at national and international film festivals and have won film awards here and there. In 1983 he received the Padma Shri and in 2005 Adoor Gopalakrishnan was awarded the highest Indian film award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2004. In 2006 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan .
