José María Vitier

José María Vitier (born January 7, 1954 in Havana ) is a Cuban pianist and composer .

The son of the writers Cintio Vitier and Fina García Marruz was a student of Cecilia Echevarría from 1962 and of Margot Rojas Mendoza from 1965 . From 1968 to 1975 he studied at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán with César López . From 1975 he taught at the music school in Matanzas. In 1977 he joined the Grupo Sintesis as a composer and pianist and became a professor at the Escuela Nacional de Arte .

As the piano accompanist of the violinist Rosa María Estrada , Vitier took part in the 1979 Flag for Peace Festival in Bulgaria. In 1983 he founded his own group, which included the violinist Lázaro González , the bassist and guitarist Nicolás Sirgado and the percussionists Miguel A. Rodríguez , Eugenio Osorio and Antonio Carreras . With this group he performed at festivals in the GDR, Mexico, the USA, Venezuela, Canada and France in the following years.

For his music to Constante Diego's film Mascaró, el cazador americano , Vitier was awarded the Premio Choral in 1992 . In 1993 he gave concerts at the Canadian Glenn Gould Theater with saxophonist Jane Bunnett , double bass player Carlos del Puerto and pianist Frank Emilio Flynn , after which he appeared at the Festival Cervantino in Mexico with singer Miriam Ramos and Carlos del Puerto.

In 1994 he went on a concert tour to Spain with Pablo Milanés . In the same year he was awarded the Premio Pananbí for his music for the Oscar-nominated film Fresa y chocolate by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío . In 1995 he served as a juror at the Second International Piano Competition in Ciudad Juárez. His albums Salmo de las Américas and Canciones del buen amor were nominated for a Grammy in 2000 and 2002, respectively. In 2017 he presented a selection of his most successful compositions at a concert at the Instituto Cervantes in Paris under the heading Tarde en La Habana .
