Mosfilm ( Russian Мосфильм ) is the best-known Russian film company and one of the largest film groups in Europe . There are 13 studios on the company premises with an area of 14,000 m².

history

Mosfilm was formed in 1920 from the two nationalized film workshops of Alexander Khanshonkov and IN Yermolev. In the anniversary year of the October Revolution , construction began on what was then known as the Soyussudio, which was completely monopolized by the state in 1929/30 and was given its current name in 1935. The monumental steel sculpture " Worker and collective farm woman " by the sculptor Wera Muchina has served as the logo since 1947 .

During the Soviet Union , about 2500 films were made at Mosfilm . The most popular films were the Tolstoy film adaptation of War and Peace (1966), as well as Moscow Doesn't Believe the Tears that brought 100 million viewers to cinemas.

Important personalities

Sergei Eisenstein and Andrei Tarkovsky are among the most important directors of Soviet film who worked in the Mosfilm studios and who later achieved world fame .

Mosfilm today

Today, as then, Mosfilm is state-owned and makes its infrastructure available to various film companies and artistic associations, to which, in addition to recording studios, offices and special facilities are rented. That ranges from transport logistics to props and costumes to pyrotechnics .

The director , screenwriter and producer Karen Schachnasarow (* 1952) has been the general director of Mosfilm since 1998 .

Since the presidency of Vladimir Putin , the technical equipment has been modernized, but Mosfilm only receives a subsidy of 30% of its budget. This forces the company to largely forego its own cinema productions and instead to rent its infrastructure to television productions.
