Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno (original working title: Mektoub is Mektoub ) is a feature film by Abdellatif Kechiche from the year 2017 . The French - Italian - Tunisian co-production is based on a script by director Kechiche and co-screenwriter Ghalya Lacroix , which in turn was inspired by a novel by François Bégaudeau (La blessure la vraie) . It tells a coming-of-age story about a young screenwriter of Tunisian descent who traveled to southern France in the mid-1990s, where he fell into a fateful romance.

The film premiered on September 7, 2017 in competition at the 74th Venice International Film Festival .

France, in 1994 : Amin is an aspiring screenwriter based in Paris . Over the summer he decides to return home to a fishing village in the south of France. His parents run a Tunisian restaurant there. Amin begins to get closer to his family and childhood friends. Together with his cousin Tony and his best friend Ophélie, he enjoys the summer and spends the time between his parents' restaurant, the local bars and the beach, where attractive vacationers cavort. While Tony successfully hooks up with women, Amin is shy. Fascinated by the bright summer light of the Mediterranean coast, he prefers to go for expeditions with his camera. Amin embarks on a philosophical search for meaning and gathers inspiration for future scripts, until he suddenly falls into a fateful romance. Amin meets Jasmine, with whom he falls in love. At the same time he made the acquaintance of a film producer who agreed to finance his directorial debut. When the producer's wife shows interest in Amin, he has to choose between the two women and his career.

Awards

Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno competed for the Golden Lion , the main prize of the festival, in the competition at the Venice Film Festival, but was not awarded by the competition jury. The film won the Mouse d'Oro Award and the La Pellicola d'Oro Award in Venice for best production design in an international film ( Riccardo Marchegiani ).

The film was nominated for the César in the category of most promising actress (Ophelié Bau). In 2019 he was nominated for the Club Média Ciné award for best French film. The film won the ICS Prize from the Internatinale Cinephile Society.
