Yon Fan ( Chinese  楊凡 , Pinyin Yáng Fán , pseudonym Yonfan , * 1947 in the province of Hunan , China ) is a Chinese photographer and film director living in Hong Kong .

biography

Yon was born in Hunan Province in 1947. He left the People's Republic of China with his parents when he was very young and I settled the family first in Hong Kong and later in Taiwan . As a young man he returned to Hong Kong, where he worked as a photographer, but left the city again in 1968 to study film studies in the USA . After spending a few years in the USA, England and France , Yonfan returned to Hong Kong and continued working as a photographer. In 1984 he made his debut as a director with the film A Certin Romance (Shaonü riji) . After the film In Between (San tung gui shut doi) in 1993, Yon turned away from mainstream Hong Kong cinema and began to focus on marginalized identities. Homosexuality played a special role in this . With his turn to fringe or niche films, he also lost the commercial success in his home country, which could not be compensated for by the positive reception of his work at western festivals.

In 2009, Yonfan received an invitation to compete at the 66th Venice Film Festival for his feature film Lei wangzi . In 2017 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 74th Venice Film Festival .
