Ladj Ly (born January 3, 1978 in Mali ) is a French filmmaker and actor .

Life

The filmmaker Ladj Ly grew up in Montfermeil near Paris , his family originally comes from Mali. In 2007 he published his first documentary, 365 jours à Clichy-Montfermeil, about the violence that erupted in the Paris suburbs at the time. In 2008, he happened to film a brutal police operation and the police were later sentenced based on his pictures.

Ly has been convicted on multiple occasions, both for insulting officials and for aiding and abduction and deprivation of liberty, for which he received three years in prison in 2011. In 2017 he shot his award-winning short film Les Misérables in Montfermeil , the title of which was borrowed from Victor Hugo's well-known novel Die Elenden .

Ly presented his feature film debut The Angry - Les Misérables at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019 . He shot his first film mainly with people from Montfermeil and a mixture of professional and amateur actors. The Furious was awarded the jury award in Cannes in 2019, later submitted by France as a contribution to the 2020 Academy Awards in the category Best International Film and nominated in this category by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in mid-January 2020 .

At the end of June 2020, Ladj Ly became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
