Niels Arestrup (born February 8, 1949 in Montreuil-sous-Bois , Seine-Saint-Denis , Île-de-France , France ) is a French film and theater actor .

Life

He is the son of a Danish immigrant and a French woman who settled in Montreuil. He began his career in the theater before his first film role as Richard Leduc's lover in Miss O'Gynie et les hommes fleurs by Samy Pavel in 1973 . Without stopping to play the theater, he began his career as a supporting actor in ambiguous roles. In the mid-1980s, he was offered several leading roles (e.g. Le Futur est femme , Meeting Venus ). In 1988 he opened his own theater school in Ménilmontant . In 2006 he received the César for best supporting actor for his performance in Jacques Audiard's The Wild Beat Of My Heart . Three years later he was again directed by Audiard as the Corsican mafia godfather in the prison film A Prophet , which again brought him France's most important film award.
