The film is set in France in the 1970s. Former New York dancer Vanessa and her husband Roland, a writer, travel to France and check into a hotel in a sleepy and picturesque little coastal town. Roland struggles with writer's block and the disaffected couple with a marital crisis, they drift further apart during their hotel stay. You get to know the locals, such as the owner of a small café Michel and their roommates in the Hotel Lea and François, who are newly married and, unlike Vanessa and Roland, have an active sex life.
Again and again Vanessa and Roland watch the young couple through a hole in the wall of the room during caresses and sex. They also spend time with their new acquaintances, loosen up the routine of mutual silence and Roland's drinking bouts without really escaping it. On the contrary: the voyeuristic insights into the love life of the room neighbors lead to greater tensions between Vanessa and Roland.
While he feels love and lust for her, she refuses any touch and closeness. Roland confronts Vanessa with the situation several times and accuses her of jealousy over the happiness of Lea and François. Brief flashbacks show the couple's past love life and the loss of a baby. The situation escalates after Roland catches his wife through the hole in the wall with François. The young couple then leaves, Roland follows them and justifies his wife's behavior with the envy of Leaa's pregnancy, which Vanessa knew about.
After Vanessa is confronted again, she realizes the reason for her negative behavior in the loss of a child. The relationship with Roland slowly relaxes and he begins to write again. The couple get closer again and, after finishing Roland's manuscript, start their journey home again.
