action

France , 1943. The legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt plays evening after evening with his Quintette du Hot Club de France in sold-out halls and delights the audience with his gypsy jazz . Even the German occupiers cannot avoid the music. While other Sinti are being persecuted all over Europe, Django can feel safe because of his popularity - until the National Socialists want to send him on a tour of Germany. Django refuses. His lover Louise de Klerk helps him go into hiding with his pregnant wife and mother on the Swiss border. Here he meets members of his extensive family who are also on the run. He wants to get to Switzerland via Lake Geneva , but the Nazis are hot on his heels.

He's running out of money. His mother convinces an innkeeper to let Django and his musicians perform in his restaurant. After a few appearances there is a fight between guests and German soldiers; Django is then arrested, but later released.

After waiting two months, he should finally be brought across the border with his wife and mother. However, he is supposed to give a concert for local Nazi officers beforehand so that an injured British aviator can be brought across the lake to Switzerland. Strong restrictions are imposed on Django for the performance. So he is not allowed to play more than 5% blues games. Because the excited audience becomes too immoral for the host, the concert is abruptly broken off.

A motorcycle traveling soldier reports the interruption of telephone lines and that there is an explosive stop on a German train with heavy losses gave. The German military realize that they have been deceived and diverted. An officer pushes Louise de Klerk to the ground. Django's family members are evicted from their lakeshore spot and their property is burned down with flamethrowers . Django escapes, but has to leave his wife and mother behind.

In May 1945 his Requiem for the Sinti and Roma killed by National Socialism was performed in Paris. In addition to strings and a choir, the piece also has a church organ . Django's wife with child and his mother are among the audience. In the credits you learn that the main part of the requiem has been lost and only a fragment is known.
