Mati Diop

Mati Diop (born June 22, 1982 in Paris ) is a French director , screenwriter , camerawoman and actress.

Life

Born in Paris in 1982, Mati Diop comes from the famous Senegalese Diop family. Her father Wasis Diop is a musician and songwriter who is known for mixing traditional Senegalese folk music with modern pop music and jazz. She is also the niece of the filmmaker and actor Djibril Diop Mambéty . Diop's French mother is a photographer and art director.

Diop worked as an actress, a. a. for Claire Denis , Antonio Campos and Matias Piñero. She has also made short films, including the documentary A Thousand Suns , which is about the main character of one of her uncle's most famous films, Touki Bouki . In 2009 she made the short film Atlantiques .

The feature film based on it, Atlantique , for which she directed and wrote the screenplay, she presented at the Cannes International Film Festival , where it competed for the Palme d' Or. Diop was the first black female director to compete in Cannes. In November 2019, she was included in the 10 Directors to Watch by the industry journal Variety . Atlantique was submitted by Senegal as an entry for the Academy Awards 2020 in the category Best International Film and was shortlisted in this category by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in mid-December 2019 .

At the end of June 2020, Diop became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
