Directed by Mati Diop , who wrote the script together with Olivier Demangel . According to her own statements, the Franco-Senegalese wanted to make a film about a very specific period of time, between 2002 and 2010, in which young Senegalese had set off en masse towards Europe. In the absence of men, women are the focus in Atlantique until the disappeared reappear. Regarding this design, Diop remarks: "I noticed that I need the living to tell this story, a story about those who stay." Their sense of romance goes hand in hand with a tendency towards the supernatural, and so they mingled in hers too Film European romanticism with African spirituality .
