I'll go buy cigarettes is a French animated short film directed by Osman Cerfon from 2018.

action

12 year old Jonathan and his older sister Louise live with their mother. The father left the family when the mother was pregnant with Jonathan. He never saw his father and that's how he imagines his father, who in his fantasy is always close by. In the kitchen he sits in the cupboard and gets some Coke from Jonathan, when he empties the washing machine he is in the laundry drum and freezes in the freezer, from which Jonathan takes a pizza. Occasionally they both play cards, although Jonathan can never exchange his father's cards for his imaginary father.

Louise has a boyfriend she's dating. Jonathan secretly goes to her room when she is not home and meets her boyfriend in his imagination in a dresser. A short conversation ensues in which Jonathan learns that the teenager and his sister have not yet slept together. When Louise appears, Jonathan escapes from her room and loses some of his playing cards, which slip under the door into his mother's locked room.

Jonathan watches a film in which Louise's friend leaves the heavily pregnant Louise and claims that he just wants to get a cigarette for a short time. Jonathan laughs. His imaginary father is sitting on the bookshelf, throwing down photo albums. In all of them the mother has torn out the father's face; the imaginary father has painted his face in the empty spaces.

A little later, Jonathan tries to get his mother to give him the playing cards lying in her room, but she refuses, as it is time for everyone to go to bed. He doesn't realize that she was crying. That same night, Jonathan sees Louise's boyfriend steal from her room and leave the apartment. He loses an empty packet of cigarettes in the process. The next morning, Louise is devastated because her boyfriend abandoned her. Jonathan sneaks into his mother's room and gets his playing cards. There he finds the key to her chest of drawers: In the chest of drawers are the father's things and a complete photo. The imaginary father now has a face for Jonathan. He takes the picture into his room and numerous imaginary fathers look over his shoulder. A little later the fantasy figure has disappeared and Jonathan throws away his playing cards.

production

Osman Cerfon dealt with his own childhood in I'll go buy cigarettes loosely, so he grew up without a father and described in an interview how he asked himself if every man on the street could be his father. Cerfon wrote the script for the film within five hours; Parts of the dubbing were recorded improvised.

The film was animated in 2D with a 3D background, with Cerfon choosing a style that he himself described as "stylized realism". Critics compared the style to that of the Beavis and Butt-Head series .

Various musical works and songs are used in the film:
