Suffering and Glory (original title Dolor y gloria , international English title Pain & Glory ) is a drama film directed by Pedro Almodóvar , which was released in Spanish cinemas on March 22, 2019. The international premiere took place on May 17, 2019 as part of the Cannes International Film Festival , where the film competed for the Palme d'Or. The story of the film is shaped by autobiography. At the 2020 Academy Awards , he was nominated for best international film , and Antonio Banderas for his role as best leading actor .

action

The film follows the life story of an aged film director. Almodóvar reflects on decisions he made in his life as a filmmaker and tells of first loves, second loves, his mother and mortality, but also of an actor with whom the director liked in the 1960s and 1980s worked and still works in the present.

production

Antonio Banderas , here at the Goya Awards 2020, took on the leading role as Salvador Mallo

It was directed by Pedro Almodóvar . The director mixes the autobiographical and fiction in his film. Doris Senn from the Filmbulletin remarks in her criticism that suffering and glory take up the stories of “desire” and “childhood” told in the earlier films. In La ley del deseo , with whom Almodóvar celebrated his breakthrough 32 years earlier, the main character lives in a love triangle with two men, and in La mala educación a filmmaker was caught up in a creative crisis from his childhood.

Antonio Banderas took on the leading role as Salvador Mallo. This is the alter ego of Pedro Almodóvar and the name is a partial acronym of Almodóvar. Penélope Cruz took on the role of his mother Jacinta Mallo, who is played at the age of Julieta Serrano . The role of Alberto Crespo was cast with Asier Etxeandia . Leonardo Sbaraglia as Federico, Nora Navas as Mercedes and Cecilia Roth as Zulema can also be seen in other roles . Raúl Arévalo plays the padre, Pedro Almodóvar's brother Agustín Almodóvar took on the role of another clergyman in the film. The Spanish pop star Rosalía can be seen in her debut film role in Dolor y Gloria .

The German dubbing was created after the dialogue direction by Pierre Peters-Arnolds on behalf of Christa Kistner Synchronproduktion GmbH, Berlin. Bernd Vollbrecht lends his voice to Salvador Mallo in the German version, Claudia Lössl dubbed his mother Jacinta at a young age.

The shooting took place in the Spanish municipality of Paterna in the province of Valencia .

The film premiered on March 13, 2019 at the Capitol in Madrid and was released in Spanish cinemas on March 22, 2019. The international premiere took place on May 17, 2019 as part of the Cannes International Film Festival , where the film competed for the Palme d'Or. In June 2019 he was presented at the Sydney Film Festival . The film is slated to hit German cinemas on July 25, 2019, and in Austrian cinemas the following day. Previously, it was shown at the end of June and beginning of July 2019 at the Munich Film Festival in the Spotlight section. In September 2019 the film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations and at the end of September and beginning of October 2019 at the New York Film Festival .

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. The statement of reasons for the release states that the main character's drug consumption is not glorified and that the subject of homosexuality is presented so naturally that there is no risk of impairment in children from the age of six.

Reviews and grossing results

So far, the film has won over 97 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics and received an average rating of 8.3 out of a possible 10 points, placing it in the middle of the films presented in Cannes. In the critics' mirror of critic.de he received mostly positive reviews. In the critics' survey published by Screen on the festival contributions in Cannes, he received 3.3 out of 4 possible points. Indie Wire counted suffering and glory of the best LGBT Q-movies of the year of 2019.

Doris Senn from Filmbulletin says that without the eccentric characters and the grotesque exuberance of the plot, which have become a trademark of Almodóvar's oeuvre and which at least to some extent also characterize the first two parts of the 32-year-old trilogy, suffering and glory would be more reserved, also more subtle, poetic, more conciliatory and maybe even milder with age. A typical Almodóvar was created here, which once again lets the great emotions and obsessions pass in review and at the same time a very personal portrait of the unbroken, creative filmmaker.

Michael Meyns from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that Antonio Banderas has never appeared as tender and vulnerable as in suffering and glory : “Without falling into pathos and melodrama, he indicates the self-doubts of his character, the mistakes and failures that have emerged over the decades have accumulated the attempt to come to terms with his past. "Pedro Almodóvar made a film with sorrow and glory that on the one hand consistently continues his oeuvre, but on the other also takes a new direction:" Towards a cinema that has its power no longer draws on excess or melodramatic exaggeration, but feeds entirely on the emotions of his characters. A great film from a great director. "

The film magazine epd Film named Suffering and Glory the Film of the Month for July 2019.

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings so far is US $ 27.4 million. After its start in Germany, it reached number 1 on the art house cinema charts and has so far recorded 195,882 visitors.
