Beautiful Loser is a 2018 French short film directed by Maxime Roy .

action

Michel is 53 years old, a dry alcoholic and, after 22 years as a consumer, has been on methadone withdrawal for 4 months . At Alcoholics Anonymous he talks about his pain and his problems in doing justice to the almost adult son Léo and the barely 10-month-old straggler Gabriel, whom he is allowed to look after every two weeks on the weekend. He never wanted a second child, feels overwhelmed and feels the need to relapse again.

One day he has Gabriel at home and Léo also comes by. Both spend a harmonious weekend, at the end of which Michel and Léo bring little Gabriel on the motorcycle to his mother Hélène. She is furious because it snowed and something could have happened to the child. She throws Léo out, who wants to smoke in her apartment. Michel, who still feels a lot for her, rejects her: she needs a hold in life herself.

The visit to the doctor also demotivates Michel, so the doctor makes it clear to him that years of overexploitation of the body cannot be undone within a few weeks. It takes time, but it will get better. Michel is late to pick up Gabriel and is disappointed by Hélène. Léo, in turn, reveals to him a little later that he will not spend the night with him, but rather sleep with a friend. Michel is frustrated and cannot sleep at night as Gabriel screams all the time. Léo does not answer his call, so he gives up: he buys heroin . When he wants to inject it at home, Léo calls and tells Michel that he will be with him in five minutes. Michel begins to cry and injects the heroin down the sink.
